I got this email from the mayor this morning. I have lived in the city for 20 years and this is the first time the city has reached out to me and formally asked for any kind of help. I'm not sure if other mayors have tried this. Maybe this is the first time they had my email address—or the first time they managed to keep the message out of my spam folder. But I applaud the effort.

New York is not a city of bystanders. People love to get involved, and they take immense pride in it. There are plenty of people in every borough who want to help make New York City better in different ways, so why not enlist help from New Yorkers who are passionate about these issues. This email is a small step toward something very big.
